Paperkite Creative Workshops for Kids
Paperkite Creative Summer Workshops are a fun and creative way to spend summer vacation. Workshops are available for grades 1-6 and offer a variety of activities from arts and crafts to creative writing and imagination workshops. All classes meet at the Smithy-Pioneer Gallery classroom, 55 Pioneer Street, Cooperstown, NY and include a healthy snack. All work will be exhibited and presented at an end of season celebration. Jewelry Making with Tamara Iversen – Grades 3-5
July 6 & 8, Tuesday and Thursday, 9 am – 12 pm, Smithy Pioneer Gallery Classroom
Course Fee: $55 Materials: $5
We love to sparkle. Tamara Iversen, owner of Hyde Bay Beadworks, will teach students both the creative and technical aspects of Jewelry design. In this two-day workshop students will work hands-on creating their very own necklaces and bracelets. Includes a healthy snack.
Mobile Making with Adam Kolek – Grades 3-5
July 13 & 15, Tuesday and Thursday, 9 am – 12 pm, Smithy Pioneer Gallery Classroom
Course Fee: $55 Materials: $5
Mobile making is the perfect balance of science and creativity. Professor Adam Kolek will show student how to make beautiful mobiles from every day materials. At the end of this two-day workshop students will bring home a mobile of their own making. Includes a healthy snack.
Nature Imprints on Ceramic Pots with Caitlin Cook Wightman – Grades 3-5
July 19 & 22, Monday and Thursday, 9 am – 12 pm, Smithy Pioneer Gallery Classroom
Course Fee: $55 Materials: $5
Ever find something in nature that truly inspires you? Learn to imprint a natural find with Caitlin Cook Wightman, Art teacher for Cooperstown Central Schools. In this two-day workshop students will learn how to hand-build pottery and create an imprint. The students will leave with their own glazed and fired ceramic pot. Includes a healthy snack.
Creative Writing Workshops with Elizabeth Buchinger
Create a Fairy Tale Adventure – Grades 1-3
July 26-30, Monday through Friday, 9 am – 12 pm, Smithy Pioneer Classroom, Course Fee: $125
In this class, younger writers and pre-writers will learn the elements of creating vivid settings, compelling characters and unforgettable stories. We will read fairy tales from many different cultures, then create our own fairy tale characters and work together to write a group story. Includes a healthy snack.
Mythical Creatures – Grades 3-6
Aug. 2-6, Monday through Friday, 9 am – 12 pm, Smithy Pioneer Classroom, Course Fee: $125
Students will learn about mythical creatures from a variety of traditions and cultures by reading stories and seeing artwork based on those myths. We will talk about how myths come into existence, and why they are important. Then students will have a chance to create their own mythical creatures and characters, and bring them to life through stories or visual art. Includes a healthy snack.
New York Animal Tales – Grades 3-6
Aug. 9-13, Monday through Friday, 9 am – 12 pm, Smithy Pioneer Classroom, Course Fee: $125
In this class, we will take a tour of the animals who live in New York with a trip to the Farmers’ Museum’s exhibit “Wild Times.” We’ll learn about animals who live in our backyards – as well as animals we hope don’t live in our backyards. Each writer will choose an animal to be the main character of a story, and we will learn how to turn our research into compelling characters and riveting stories. Includes a healthy snack.
